Syntax Project resources

Overview

  • All resources are in Google Slide format so they can be edited and expanded upon. This is a suggested sequence of lessons only. Depending on the skill and conceptual knowledge of your students, you may wish to use lessons from earlier grades.
  • Once a lesson objective has been taught, the skill/concept needs to be revised regularly and embedded into curriculum content. The best opportunity to do this is during the ‘You Do’ phase of a lesson.
  • Sentence-level writing strategies should be continually revised and embedded into content after teaching them explicitly. Sentence-level writing is best taught in the context of student writing, and curriculum content drives the rigour of the writing activities.

  • Pre-Foundation students need multiple repetitions of sentence structures to develop a strong understanding of oral syntax. These resources contain Colourful Semantics icons that can act as a scaffold for the targeted sentence structures.
  • When using these slides, ensure that every student has a turn at saying the target sentence for each prompt. I.e. many opportunities of ‘saying together’ , ‘saying to our shoulder partner’, and ‘saying to the teacher’.
